Mother’s Day in the United States
For as long as we know, many cultures around the world have traditionally celebrated mothers and motherhood. The Greeks, for instance, worshiped Rhea, as the Great Mother of the Gods. And the Romans honored Cybele, the mother of the gods with the festival of Hilaria, “the cheerful ones.” Hilarious. isn’t it?
In modern times, Mother’s Day began in the United States in 1908 at St Andrew’s Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia, when Anna Jarvis organized a memorial for her mother. The Church is now where the International Mother’s Day Shrine is.
Anna was a peace activist during the American Civil War when she looked after wounded soldiers on both sides. Later she started Mother’s Day Work Clubs where she spoke public health issues.
In 1908 when her mother died, 1908, Anna Jarvis began her work to make Mother’s Day a nationally recognized holiday in the United States. Only 3 years later, all U.S. states observed the holiday and in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson designated every second Sunday of May as a public holiday to honor all mothers.
The Month of May
May is the fifth month of the year with 31 days. It is named after Maia, the Greek goddess of fertility.
If April opened the growing season, it is really is May that fulfills the image of spring, with blooming flowers and sheep frolicking in the meadows. In May the Full Moon is therefore called the Flower Moon.
Did you know … that in any given year, leap year or not. no month ever ends or begins on the same weekday as May does?
