The custom to honor fathers is known to date back to at least 1508 with this tradition having its roots in Catholic Europe. The Coptic observance also observes the celebration of fatherhood on St Joseph’s Day, but that may well date back to the 5th century Egypt.
In the United States, Father’s Day was not celebrated until the 20th Century. Like Mother’s Day, which falls in May, the story starts in the same year also with a woman from West Virginia. In December 1907 Grace Golden Clayton was already mourning her father when in a nearby town 361 men died in a mining accident. Of them, 250 were fathers leaving behind a thousand children fatherless. Prompted by Grace, with his Sunday sermon the Methodist pastor of Fairmont made the first known observance of Father’s Day in the United States.
But it took many more years, another woman’s tireless efforts and even a couple of president’s unsuccessful attempts before President Lyndon
B. Johnson issued a presidential proclamation designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. President Richard Nixon finally signed it into law in 1972.
The month of June
June is probably named after the wife of Jupiter, Juno. Since she is also the goddess of marriages, that is a good reason to get married in June. Or was it maybe the other way round?
In 2020, Sunday, June 14 is Flag Day (U.S.). Be sure to raise the flag if you are American!
But there are lots of other good reasons to celebrate in June, starting with World Milk Day on the first day. There is also Hug Your Cat Day on the 4th, National Doughnut Day on the 5th and National Apple Strudel Day on the 17th.
Hopefully, you will take Father’s Day a little more seriously, which in the June 2020 Calendar falls on the 21st.
