The Month of January
Have you ever wondered why we have a January Calendar? Well, January is the door’ into the new year and so named after Janus, the Roman god of doors. Janus is the two-faced god because he can see both the past and the future.
Curiously, even though the Romans had a calendar of their own, originally it only had ten months. January and February were only added about 700 years before Christ was born. Before that, the calendar simply ended in December and everyone had to wait until the March Equinox to agree what the date was. Too bad if you had a birthday in between. And it took another 250 years for the Romans to move the beginning of the year to have a January calendar, what with Janus being the god of doors.
The length of the month was also tinkered with. Initially, all the months were simply 30 days long, but the Romans found that their tidy calendar just didn’t add up to a whole year when they noticed that the stars visible in the sky would slowly change year by year. Julius Caesar got impatient and had his astronomers sort it out. So, they created what we now call the Julian Calendar, by expanding January and some other months to 31 days.
Caesar’s astronomers also invented leap years which add an extra day in February to put the year back into sync. Because the rotation around the sun takes 365 days AND about 6 hours, the leap year every four years straightens that out again. The leap year is needed to make sure we don’t end up with summer at Christmas in the Northern Hemisphere after 700 years or so have gone by.
You can download and print January calendars for 2020, 2021, 2022 and more. Each calendar page has days of the week and important holidays marked. There is enough space to also let you add important dates for you. You can attach the printed January calendars to the wall or insert them in a binder.
