February is the second month of the year and holidays are marked for easy reference. Special days in the February Calendar include Valentine’s Day (Mon, 14 Feb 2022) and Presidents’ Day (Washington’s Birthday on Mon, 21 Feb 2022).

In the February 2022 calendar, the moon goes through a full cycle within the month:

The Month of February
February is an odd month for a number of reasons. You probably know that every leap year, the month adds an extra day. Leap years were added every 4 years by Roman astronomers to compensate for the extra fraction of a day it takes for the earth to make its annual pass around the sun. Februum was an ancient spring festival in Rome.
The extra days added every leap year make sure that the seasons don’t change slowly in the calendar. Without leap years we would end up with Christmas in summer eventually. But maybe that is not a bad thing if you talk to people from downunder in Australia and New Zealand!
February is also the shortest month. Turns out that it has always been the odd one out, ever since the Romans started tinkering with their calendar. The first version just counted lunar cycles of 28 days starting at the equinox. But they simply stopped counting after naming 10 months and waited through the winter until the next spring equinox to start again.
That obviously didn’t work very well so in around 700 BCE January and February were inserted. I guess February drew the short straw and became the filler which ended up being 23 or 24 days at different stages.
To keep the calendar aligned with the stars and seasons, another month was occasionally added to straighten it out again. You’d think the Romans would have sorted it out earlier, but it wasn’t until Julius Caesar had enough of it and the leap year was introduced.
